The airplane is just a bunch of sticks, wires and cloth, a tool for learning about the sky and about what kind of person I am, when I fly. An airplane stands for freedom, for joy, for the power to understand, and to demonstrate that understanding. Those things are not destructible. Richard Bach, Nothing by Chance

African Pilot enters its fourth year of publishing
Welcome to a New Year, 2005. On behalf of our staff we wish our readers a most successful 2005 where aviation in South Africa will grow to new heights. As we enter our fourth year of publishing we are pleased to report that our January 2005 edition was fully distributed between Christmas and New Year. This edition has been applauded as our best ever, but we believe that going forward each edition has to be a masterpiece with better pictures and articles that are designed to entertain aviation enthusiasts throughout southern Africa and the African continent. This AP Newsletter has also proved to be a remarkable marketing tool for African Pilot Serious about flying. During this year we will be launching our Aviation Services Guide in February as well as developing another significant project in aviation towards the end of the year.

New staff appointed at African Pilot
2005 heralds some important new appointments at AFS Studio (Pty) Ltd, the production facility for African Pilot as well as our extensive customer base.

Mr. Kabedi Jack Mabotha has already started in the position of transport and handyman.

Ms Martha Kwiatkowski started in December as a graphic designer and has already showed her excellent creative talent.

Mr. Andre Schild started today as a marketing assistant to Athol Franz with the specific task of developing the African Pilot market in particular.

Temporary junior receptionist position available
The studio has a temporary junior receptionist position available for the month of January. If you know of someone, possibly a young person who has just completed school, who would like to fill this position for a month or so please ask them to contact Jane at (011) 702 2342/3 ASAP.

The correct spelling of certain words
Questions have been raised by some readers about the spelling of certain popular words used by African Pilot in aviation terminology. On starting the magazine we assessed several popular words and made a decision to stick with the correct South African spelling. Much of the worlds aviation is directed from the USA; therefore it is understandable that US English (some of which is perceived as slang) is often all that is understood. In addition, Microsoft is so powerful that even when one has set ones computer to South African or United Kingdom English, the programme may return to English US in due course. Since Americans tend to spell phonetically and do not use the Queens English, we are likely to see this problem for generations to come. In addition, Americans still work in miles, US gallons (different to UK gallons), pounds, and a whole host of measuring systems in which the remainder of the world have already converted to the metric system.

Our editorial team at African Pilot has attempted to standardise wherever possible in order to reflect the correct English from within the region in which we reside. We utilise a combination of UK/SA English with several customised dictionary entries where consistency is important. However, where a statement or phrase is directly quoted, we use inverted commas and repeat the actual spelling of the author. Our editorial team is indeed grateful to those readers who have taken the trouble to raise questions about correct spelling and terminology and welcomes such input, as we are by no means beyond making errors. We are flattered that our readers are as serious about the correct use of the English language as they are about flying. Our efforts to produce the best aviation magazine in southern Africa are as a result of careful editing and a declared intent to be the best in every field of this business. Please feel free to provide constructive criticism wherever possible as this is the best way to get us to sit up, take note and improve the standard. Thank you.

Appeal received from Paul Treleven
Following the tragedy playing itself out in Asia, and feeling a complete sense of 'frustration' not being able to physically help, I have decided to get as many people as possible to donate money to the RED CROSS to assist those poor people in those beautiful regions of the world where we take fantastic holidays from time to time. I am donating an amount that I feel I can afford and those of you that wish to do likewise, herewith the SA RED CROSS banking details:

Aviation Calendar 2005
In an effort to provide a complete service to the aviation business we are publishing the calendar as early as possible. Airshows in 2005 are destined to become the third largest public participation events in South Africa after rugby and soccer. African Pilot is the only southern African aviation publication that regularly publishes an accurate Airshows and Events calendar. All events are published on the African Pilot Website: www.africanpilot.co.za which is regularly updated as dates for aviation events are reserved by organisers.

Howick Flying Club breakfast
Every Saturday morning the Howick Flying Club provides an Aviators breakfast between 8 and 9.30 am. The weight-shift micro lights usually fly in early and their first breakfast is served at eight.

They are generally followed by the three axis microlight pilots, and then the glider boys who like to have a little turbulence later in the morning.

On Sunday 27 February we will host many of Natals old boys from Pietermaritzburg and Durban Wings Club to a brunch fly and drive-in. First serving 8.30am and the last is at 11.00 am.

If anyone wants to make a weekend of it, we can arrange B & B, Hotel or bring your own tent accommodation on the field.

Regards, Mick McConnell, Fax (033) 330 5342 Tel. (033) 330 5341 mcmuddles@sai.co.za

Advertising in our February 2005 edition

Since all our staff returned to the business on Monday 3 January and have been dealing with a backlog of more than 250 e-mails, we are now in a position to accept advertising material for our forthcoming, bumper February edition. In addition to the regular monthly magazine we will also be publishing our first Aviation Service Guide that has been well supported by the aviation business of South Africa. If you are interested in obtaining a last minute entry into the annual African Pilot Services Guide, please call our office ASAP: (011) 702 2342/3 as time is running out. For advertising entries in the February edition of African Pilot magazine the deadline is this Friday, 7 January 2005. Our 2005 advertising price guide is published on our Website: www.africanpilot.co.za Please e-mail your interest to: info@africanpilot.co.za. Thank you - Ed.

Aviation humour (US spelling humor)
Ten of the greatest lies in aviation:
1. The weather is going to be alright; it's clearing to VFR.
2. Don't worry about the weight and balance -- it'll fly.
3. If we get a little lower I think we'll see the lights.
4. I'm 22, got 6000 hours including 3000 hours in a King Air.
5. We shipped the part yesterday.
6. I'd love to have a woman co-pilot.
7. All you have to do is follow the book.
8. This plane out-performs the book by 20 percent.
9. We in aviation are overpaid, under worked and well respected.
10. Oh sure, no problem, I've got over 2000 hours in that aircraft.

Until next week, please be "Serious about flying".
Athol Franz
