This special AP newsletter has been distributed on request of the Commercial Aviation Association of South Africa (CAASA) and National Airways Corporation (NAC)

On Monday night criminals broke into the business premises of CAASA and NAC both situated at Lanseria International Airport and completely vandalised their respective offices. Apparently they first broke into CAASA's offices on the northern side of the airfield, tied up the Coin security guard with wire before ransacking the CAASA offices and the Lanseria Coin offices. They then dressed up in Coin clothing, commandeered the Coin security vehicle and hit NAC's offices the south side of Lanseria Airport. The worst hit sections of NAC's business are the Finance, Information Technology and International Operations sections. Naturally both CAASA and NAC will be affected by this terrible deed.

In order to contact CAASA please telephone:
Oliver Stratford Cell: 084 840 3214
Rene Handel Cell: 082 702 2696

I understand that NAC's switchboard is not affected by the break-in

African Pilot's view on this type of crime
Many years ago I was the chairman of the committee responsible for the closing of the suburb in which I live and from where African Pilot operates its offices by means of a 12.5 Km electric fence right around the outer perimeter of the suburb. Three entrances are closed at night - 18h00 to 06h00 leaving only one main entrance open for ALL inhabitants: owners, tenants and staff members. The result is that our suburb is one of the safest anywhere in South Africa, whilst at the same time property values have escalated to a level much higher than surrounding suburbs. The cash required to undertake the more than R2 million capital works was levied at R6 000 per property with a monthly fee of just over R600 per property. Naturally there were certain property owners who could not or would not contribute, but fortunately some seven years later most of these persons sold up and left the area. Today our suburb has a 95% participation factor and is managed almost like a mini town council.

Now what has all of this to do with Lanseria?
The truth is that both areas of real estate are nearly the same size and have similar problems. Lanseria land owners, tenants, staff members and visitors need to understand that this situation could easily happen to them since crime in South Africa is not going away in the short to medium term. Why wake up when it is too late and the gun or knife has done the dirty deed? The longer you procrastinate the more likely the chance that you will be taken out as the immediate area surrounding Lanseria is full of squatters who have nothing to loose. Life is cheep and if one of these criminals wants your cell phone, handbag or vehicle they will shoot you down in cold blood.

The time has come for ALL law abiding citizens of South Africa to stand together and face up to the single element that is retarding economic growth in our country - CRIME! This is your problem not your neighbours or some distant person who you have never met.

Later this week, African Pilot will be meeting with Lanseria management in order to obtain a more detailed account of proposed security upgrades on the airfield. However, please remember that criminals live in our midst and this terrible situation could happen anywhere and on any airfield. For now our heartfelt condolences to the two businesses that have been badly affected by this specific crime. We hope you can repair the damage to your respective businesses as soon as possible.

African Pilot readers' survey
On behalf of African Pilot, I wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our readers who took the time to respond to our 2006 readers' survey included in the February 2006 edition of African Pilot. We have learned so much from our respondents, and will utilize the results to even further improve southern Africa's premier aviation magazine.

We had a total of 219 respondents during the specified time period. The majority of our respondents are recreational flyers and aviation enthusiasts. 57% of respondents operate aircraft; 43% own their own aircraft. Outright ownership prevails amongst respondents who own their own aircraft. Our respondents were most likely to own and/or operate aircraft types in the following order: light certified fixed wing; microlights; very light uncertified fixed wing, and helicopters. The most popular articles amongst respondents were new aircraft reviews; Airshows and humorous articles as well as aircraft type surveys. The least popular articles amongst our respondents were: articles on virtual flying; medical articles and legal articles. We received numerous requests for articles on flight training; flight safety, flight tests and articles on military aircraft types.

The data collected is being analyzed and will be utilized for use in future magazines. By now the audit process required for our ABC rating is complete and an official ABC rating has been applied to the magazine. African Pilot is now unquestionably the premier aviation magazine in southern Africa.
