Nelspruit airshow this coming weekend The Lowveld airshow will take place on Saturday 19 May at the old Nelspruit airfield and African Pilot will be there. Anyone who would like a lift to Nelspruit in African Pilot's Mercedes Benz Vito Pilot 1 GP I welcome to join Mark and me for the trip. We will be departing in the early hours of Friday morning (about 05H30) and returning on Sunday 20 May at about mid morning. However, you must make sure that you have accommodation reserved in Nelspruit. The Merc Vito is very comfortable for long journeys such as this and also has a superb sound system. African Pilot's June edition Now that the design and make up of our June edition is complete, the magazine is busy printing at ColorPress for scheduled completion on time as usual by Friday 18 May. Due to my extensive travelling this past month, I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the African Pilot extended family, who assisted with the management of the business during my absence from South Africa. Our readers will derive considerable benefit from the expose that was afforded me on my travels to Brazil and Europe this past month.
African Pilot's July edition starts immediately The airshow season is now in full swing and this means that the African Pilot team will be seen in several South African towns and cities during the coming months. Wherever the AP team happens to arrive, we look forward to meeting with its readers. The team is constantly on the look out for interesting aviation material, which is so often found at distant airfields. Do you have a unique project, or do you know of someone who has an interesting project? Our team will be very happy to schedule a meeting with you wherever you are.
The African Pilot July edition will feature all types of business jets, from the smallest Very Light Jets to much larger Corporate Airliner types. This is an interesting market that is growing at a phenomenal rate especially in southern Africa. These days many company executives are hard pushed for time and do not wish to rely on scheduled airlines, especially into deepest darkest Africa. They would rather travel in the comfort, safety and convenience of a private business jet, which is at their disposal no matter how long their meeting may last.
Very Light Jets are going to revolutionise corporate business air transport over the next ten years as older piston twins and certain turboprop types come out of service. African Pilot has already sent questionnaires for completion to all known importers / representatives of business jets both in South Africa and abroad. However, if you know of a particular business jet that we may have overlooked, please contact me: editor@africanpilot.co.za Thank you.
African Pilot's August edition This edition is possibly one of the most exciting magazines of the year for general aviation due to African Pilot's annual Light Sport Aircraft survey. The August edition will feature fully assembled light aircraft types that are marketed new to the southern African aviation community. The representatives of Light Sport Aircraft types have already all been invited to participate in this survey. However, once again if you have not received a questionnaire from African Pilot, please contact me as soon as possible so that this survey will be the most comprehensive LSA survey ever conducted in Africa. Please note that, although this is an entirely free service to the industry for the benefit of African Pilot readers, advertising support from the market is appreciated. Please refer to the price guide on the African Pilot Website: www.africanpilot.co.za Thank you. With more than forty LSA types already in the market, this bumper edition is likely to increase in size by another eight to sixteen pages.
Leopardsong Lodges This last weekend, I travelled to the Leopardsong Bush Lodge, which is situated within the Dinokeng conservancy area only 60 kilometres north of Pretoria. Situated on a 12 500 Ha game farm this five star private game lodge is an ideal venue for small company conferences or people who simply want to get away from the city for a night or two. The Dinokeng wilderness area will soon be expanded to include many other private game reserves and with assistance from government the game reserve that is about to be established will cover an area of 125 000 Ha. Presently only plains game roam on the reserve, but within this year the intention is to introduce the 'big five'.
Leopardsong Game Lodge will be the subject of African Pilot's July cover prize where a two night getaway will be awarded to two people for the first correct entry drawn. The reserve has a heliport, but very soon a 1500 metre tar runway will be available for private aircraft. For further information on Leopardsong Game Lodge, please visit the Website: www.leopardsong.co.za Thank you.
Air Force Base Ysterplaat in the news South Africa's Defence Ministry plans to introduce private participation to cut the cost of ownership at South African Air Force (SAAF) air bases, a government spokesperson said last weekend. 'A private concessionaire, would be tasked with routine maintenance, repairs and the upgrading of infrastructure'
The SAAF is looking at ways of introducing commercial co-use at its Cape Town Air Force Base, Ysterplaat, turning the once exclusively military airfield into a public-private partnership The Department of Defence (DoD) said in an advertisement over the weekend that the SAAF also planned to bring on board a private concessionaire, that would upgrade the runways, taxiways, bulk fuel tanks, air traffic control and fire fighting equipment. “The SAAF has identified the need to carry on aviation-related commercial activities that provide long-term, mutually-beneficial relationship with one or more private entities,†the DoD stated.
First Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 emerges from paint shop By Andrew Doyle Airbus has painted the first A380 destined to enter airline service with launch operator Singapore Airlines (SIA) in October this year. Aircraft MSN003 emerged from the manufacturer's Hamburg paint hangar following installation of its passenger cabin in March, and testing of the associated systems last month. Several passenger windows in the forward lower deck have been blanked out, suggesting that SIA has opted for an innovative first-class cabin design. SIA says 100 painters worked over four shifts to hand-polish the 3,100m2 of fuselage surface area. The painting process took 21 days.
The aircraft will now undergo more testing on the ground before its cabin systems are tested in flight this summer. Additional A380s for Singapore Airlines - MSN005, MSN006 and MSN008 - are also in Hamburg and are "on track according to the production schedule", says SIA. "In fact, MSN008 is even ahead of schedule, arriving in Hamburg two weeks earlier than planned," the airline adds. MSN005 is currently undergoing electrical harness installation. This will be followed by systems testing in the summer and cabin furnishing.
Aero Club of East Africa's Aviation Centre - Wilson Airport Nairobi The Aero Club's "AVIATION CENTRE", providing flight planning services, international flight clearances, fuelling of aircraft, 'aircraft push-back' , valet and other yet to be identified services and facilities was opened on 1 April. A fully-equipped conference room for aviation-related meetings and a pilot's shop are also being established. Further, a serious flight simulator is just about up and running.
Additional facilities include two computers for broadband internet access to members and guests, to assist pilots with their needs for licensing applications, downloading of weather forecasts and satellite photos, and more. Two new staff members, Leonida and Wellington, have been recruited. Both have many years of experience in aviation operations and flight planning. Pilots can obtain the daily NOTAMS at the centre and enjoy a flight planning and manifest service and weather maps. Aircraft owners can also get their planes washed and cleaned at the centre. All East African aircraft owners and pilots, particularly sport and private pilots, are urged to make use of this facility.
Nairobi Airshow planned for 7 October at Wilson Airport The Aero Club of East Africa is holding the 2007 Nairobi Air Show at Wilson Airport on Sunday 7 October 2007. After months of promotion by PR Company Visergy Limited, sufficient sponsorship has been found to ensure a credible event. In a visionary move, the Kenya Airports Authority has come forward as the main sponsor of the Show. The KAA is to be congratulated on this hands-on support of aviation and bringing flying to the Kenyan public.
So far, the show will have class acts from the Kenya |
