At about 16h00 a Convair that was to be ferried to New Zealand by two Australian pilots crashed just beyond Wonderboom’s airport perimeter. According to eyewitness accounts the Convair took off but its engines were spluttering and backfiring. One engine caught fire and in an attempt, to return to the airport the aircraft crashed into a factory that removed its wings and then the fuselage landed up in an open field. Apparently there were 11 people on board and there are survivors. This is one of the two Convair aircraft that was owned by Rovos Air, but which has been standing for some time at Wonderboom.
