Apparently performing a downwind take-off Andrew Goodenham (24) en John Jacobs (53) flying an Ikarus Light Sport Aircraft crashed between the two runways. Apparently John passed away due to he severity of his wounds, whilst there is no update on Andrew’s condition. The Ikarus with a 912 ULS is a very capable and docile aircraft. It has very good STOL ability and is well able to take-off with two persons and full fuel under normal circumstances. Like any aircraft in a downwind take-off scenario it will consume lots of runway and if you do not hold it in ground affect until your airspeed is up you are asking for trouble. I can not think of any excuse why you would take off with ANY tailwind, irrespective of aircraft type. Ask yourself why do this? Sadly we heard that at 04h00 this morning Andrew also passed away.
