When last have you been to Rand Airport? If you haven’t been there for a while do yourself a favour and go there. The entire airport has received a face lift. The old paving as you approach the terminal building from both sides and up to the entrance have been removed and replaced and through the garden path the fish pond. This makes the entrance to the airport and terminal building much more attractive. The terminal building has been cleaned up, re-painted, the awnings and railings in particular around the roof area and tower have been repaired and given a fresh coat of paint. All in all, the old girl is looking quite ‘spiffy’.
Movements at Rand showed a steady increase in 2017 and on three occasions recorded record levels of over ten thousand a month. The average for last year was just below ten thousand movements a month. This makes Rand one of the busiest general aviation airports in South Africa. The fuel price has been reduced and Avgas at R 17.55 is lower than comparative airports. Jet at R13.44 is likewise a favourable price compared to other airports of the same size and stature.
Rand Airport has become a favourite amongst local film crews whether for TV series, TV adverts or feature films. Last year seven film crews chose Rand to shoot features. Again, this year bookings for events and film shoots have already been negotiated.
Rand now has a resident aviation medical doctor. Elton Aero engineering has relocated from Richards Bay to Rand. This long-established company has a vast number of aircraft on their license and is a one stop shop who can handle MPI’s, engine rebuilds and sheet metal work.
